Furniture Shopping Made Easy, or at Least Easier

Walking into a furniture store can be a bit overwhelming (IKEA, anyone?), especially if you aren't armed with a solid game plan. There are a few things you need to decide and/or figure out ahead of time before you step foot in a store or browse a website. Doing this legwork and prep ahead of time will both enhance your shopping experience and cut down on the time it takes you to pick your new pieces. This is fairly simple stuff, but it's easy to get caught up in a shopping frenzy and end up with purchases that leave you saying, "where was this buffet table supposed to go?," and "what was I thinking when I picked this color?"

The first thing you need to do is decide what pieces you're looking for and where they are going. It's not enough to just decide you need an end table; you need to check out the spot where you envision it going and use a tape measure to find which dimensions will and won't work. Take measurements for every aspect you can think of, length and width isn't always enough. You may need to measure to see which range of heights work for pieces like tables and nightstands. Measure walls to make sure hutches and other large pieces won't cover light switches and thermostats as well.

Once you know what pieces of furniture you're looking for, you can start thinking about decorating styles, colors, and finishes. While it's best to stick with one style and theme per room, it's quite acceptable and popular to vary styles throughout your home. For example, it's quite alright to have your living room decorated in a contemporary style while your dining room has a more traditional feel. This is also a great way to give each room its own personality and at the same time allowing each room to stand on its own. If you're not dead-set 100 percent sure what style to go with, opt for a middle of the road transitional style. Transitional pieces have aspects of both modern and traditional design, which will give you some leeway when picking out your furniture.
