10 Years of Southern Entertainment Television: Lil' Cable Baron The Wal-Mart Of Cable Programming
Venice, Florida (PRWEB) November 12, 2006 -- In November Southern Entertainment Television celebrates its 10th Anniversary as one of the most trusted Family Entertainment Networks in America, and remembering the starting dates of the network through the story of its founder, Harold Brown.
Mr. Brown, founder and President of The SET, has had an ear for music for as long as he's had a nose for business. Born the seventh child of a Pentecostal preacher, Harold taught himself to play guitar to accompany the singers when his Daddy's church needed music but didn't have a budget.
Ever the entrepreneur, throughout college Harold not only performed at school functions, but produced and emceed talent shows, then managed campus radio stations, introducing his passion for Country Music to the younger audiences wherever possible. Harold relied on his accounting background and his business experience to develop a consulting practice specializing in turning around troubled businesses. One such client was a cable television operator, and hence the Lil' Cable Baron was born.
Immediately seeing both the dearth of quality programming in cable in the early 90's and the total absence of Southern Gospel music, Harold took $250 and founded Gospel Music Television.
But eventually Harold saw that preaching started to be a common thing in the Gospel Music Channel he founded back in 1992. Having managed to sell GMT without the encumbrance of a non-compete covenant, Harold founded Southern Entertainment Television in 1997 and set out to present the music he loves in its purest form, "without preaching, teaching, or soliciting money."
Harold Brown conceived a Gospel Channel with just pure and simple music, respecting the Good Lord's Word in its most pure form, through music.
In Harold Brown's words, "Music is the universal language of love; music talks about real things that happen to real people because you don't "think" music. Music comes from the heart and it is easier to attract audiences through music than through words."
For the future, Southern Entertainment Television and Mr. Brown have settled very ambitious goals. He is working to get the channels' signals all throughout the US, the Caribbean and Mexico, moving forward slow and easy but with great determination. He is also planning to launch a Hispanic Gospel and a country Music Channel as early as 2Q in 2007.
As part of his master plan, he has hired a talented group of professionals who are part of the management team and have a tremendous impact in the overall strategy to make The SET, the most important Family Entertainment Network in America. "I am such a country red-necked boy that I figured out that a group of well-formed professionals could assist me in a more sophisticated way to manage my business", he says. "I started out with $250 that's all I had in the world and now I can buy an RC and a moon pie every day".
An admirer of Sam Walton's philosophy, along with Rupert Murdock of News Corp. and Leo Hindery, formerly with TCI, Harold Brown defines his strategy: "Stack them high; Sell them cheap; Talk to your customer three days a week; Talk to vendors one day a week; and your management on Friday." And this is how the Lil' Cable Baron is becoming the Wal-Mart of cable programming delivering family-oriented content and a promise he has been serving for the last ten years: "All Music, All Day, All the Time".
